Canadian Grand Prix - Vettel grabs pole in rain-hit Canadian qualifying

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel took his third successive Canadian pole position in 1:25.425 after a rain-hit qualifying session in Montreal.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took second, missing out by just eight hundredths of a second, whilst Valtteri Bottas put in a stunning performance to grab third for Williams.

The other Mercedes of Nico Rosberg completed the second row with Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso fifth and sixth respectively.

No driver could improve on their opening times in the final session as the weather worsened in the final sector leaving Vettel atop of the standings.

A nasty crash for Ferrari’s Felipe Massa had earlier bought out the red flag in session two after the Brazilian had a collision with a barrier in sector one.

After all three practice sessions were interrupted by the elements, little was known about how the teams would fare in Montreal.

Rosberg was seeking his fourth straight pole position, after Saturday triumphs in Bahrain, Spain and Monaco, but his Mercedes team entered the weekend in chaotic shape following the row surrounding their alleged illegal tyre test.

Whilst Vettel has enjoyed much qualifying success in Canada, he has yet to convert that dominance into a race victory and will be looking to amend that record on Sunday.
