Current Athletes Who Can Do No Wrong (off the Field)

Do athletes screw up?

Obviously. We've seen some really dumb arrests over the years.

Are athletes overpaid?

The general consensus is that they probably are.

But just because some pro athletes choose to spend money like crazy and make some bad choices at times, there are others who know that having fortune and fame can be used in a positive way and who use their celebrity to help others.

From time to time Sportunes will be shedding light on those athletes that have given hope to the hopeless. That's what these athletes have done, proving they succeed at both their sport and in the community.

HANNAH TETER

Hannah Teter is an American snowboarder, She is an Olympic champion, having won the gold medal in halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Italy. She also won bronze at the 2005 FIS World Championships at Whistler, British Columbia and has six World Cup victories in her career.

While it's easy to like gold medal-winning snowboarder Hannah Teter for her looks and laid-back attitude, her involvement in the community shows that she's more than just a pretty face.

Back in 2008 Teter founded a charity called Hannah's Gold which raises money through the sales of Vermont maple syrup. The charity, in partnership with World Vision, helps to support the village of Kirindon, Kenya through building schools, digging fresh water wells and providing water filtration.

As if that's enough, in 2009 Teter donated all of her prize money to the Kirindon program. That same year, she posed in an ad campaign for PETA, protesting the Canadian seal hunt. She has also worked to raise money for Darfur and other causes, sponsors children in Honduras and the Philippines through Children International and is a spokesperson for Boarding for Breast Cancer.

In 2010 Teter launched a new charity initiative, Sweet Cheeks, which donates 40% of the sales proceeds from an exclusive line of underwear to partner organization Children International to help feed children living in extreme poverty around the world.

Teter's charitable work earned her an award for the Do Something Athlete in the VH1 Do Something Awards. The awards show is dedicated to honoring people who do good and is powered by Do Something, an organization that aims to empower, celebrate, and inspire young people.
