Barcelona keep Vilanova on payroll as he continues battle with cancer

Ill health: Vilanova has suffered a relapse

Barcelona have made a grand gesture toward their now former manager, Tito Vilanova who was forced to step down from his role following his second relapse with throat cancer.

According to the club, Barcelona will pay Vilanova’s salary for the remainder of the year while the Catalan boss undergoes intensive cancer treatment therapy.

Barcelona’s Javier Faus went on to state that the salary for new manager, Gererdo ‘Tata’ Martino will be an added expense on top of the amount that the club will continue paying Vilanova, which is a reported €7.5 million.

“Martino’s signing will be at an added cost, since Tito Vilanova will be with us. We are sad to have this situation because of Tito’s disease, but we must accept it.”

Various reports are suggesting that once Vilanova has completed his intense treatment in New York, where he was undergoing treatment during the 2012-13 season, he will return to the club in September and continue with a different position with less stress and the freedom to continue his treatment while still being a vital part of the club and it’s future.
