Last week Aaron Hernandez was arrested by the Police and charged with murder.
Tragically, we have a long list of high-profile murder cases involving professional athletes. From time to time Sportunes will be bringing those athletes that have brought more shame than glory to our sports.
Some you surely remember, whether because they are extremely famous or because they just happened. Others you might not. Either way, each horrible case serves as a reminder that being famous and wealthy doesn’t solve all your problems.
Rae Caruth
In 1999, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth orchestrated the murder of Cherica Adams, a woman he had been casually dating and who was 8 months pregnant with his child.
Apparently upset that she refused to have an abortion, Carruth hired his friend Van Brett Watkins to murder her. On the night of November 16, 1999, as Adams was driving along a road near Carruth’s home, he pulled his car in front of hers. Then another car pulled up beside hers and its passenger shot her. Then both cards sped away.
How do we know this? Because Adams didn't die right away. She was able to call police on her cell phone, and she told them what happened.
Doctors were eventually able to save the unborn child, but not his mother. Carruth and Watkins were then convicted of first degree murder, while the driver of the other car, Michael Kennedy, pled guilty to second degree murder.
As a defender of everything sport, i will take a look at the positive side and thank Rae Caruth for giving us a son, i call him the miracle child.
Whenever i'm down in life, i just remember his incredible story.
Thomas Lake wrote about this incredible child;
“He is the happiest person I’ve ever met,There’s a light inside him that I’ve never seen anywhere else. I’ve talked to several other people about his effect on me, and they say it happened to them too. Wherever he goes — to church, to physical therapy, to the Special Olympics — he makes people feel better by his mere presence. When he looks into your eyes and says hello, the whole thing feels almost spiritual. And then, of course, you have to ask yourself: If a kid like this can be so happy, what right do I have to complain?”
