Phil Mickelson holds his own to win his first British Open... as fans throw stones at BBC

After the US open last month, Sportunes packaged the most heart breaking moments of Phil Mickelson's career which is litered with implosions, near-misses and chases, running out of gas (HERE). Today Lefty made sure we are not going to add to that list as he held his own to win his first British Open.

Mickelson started the day five strokes back, but shot 5-under on Sunday, tied for the best round of the tournament. He would later call it "one of the best rounds I have ever played."

Dan Jenkins, the legendary, hall of hame golf writer, said of Mickelson's round, "That 66 by Phil is one of the greatest final rounds of a major on one of the most baffling courses I've ever seen."

Mickelson made birdies at five, nine, 13, 17 and 18 with a bogey on 10 his solitary dropped shot of a memorable day. He won his first tournament in Scotland - the home of golf - at last week's Scottish Open and becomes the first man to do the Scottish Open and Open double in successive weeks.

Henrick Stenson finished second, three shots back. Tiger Woods once again faded on Sunday, shooting 3-over and finishing five shots behind Mickelson.

The man who is nicknamed "Lefty" because of his left-handed swing, even though he is otherwise right-handed said

"I was just trying to give myself good shots on the green. It is arguably the greatest round of my life,"

"To win this feel amazing. You have to be resilient in this game. You have to be resilient and come back from losses, and use them as motivation."

"This was a day I'll remember for my entire life...I could not be more proud to be your champion. This is probably the most fulfilling moment of my career because it was something I wasn't sure I would have been able to do."

The American has now won 42 events on the PGA Tour, including five major championships: three Masters titles (2004, 2006, 2010), PGA Championship (2005), and one Open Championship (2013). He has finished runner-up in the U.S. Open a record six times and has reached a career-high world ranking of 2nd in multiple years.

He was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame in November 2011 and was inducted in May 2012.

Despite Phil Mickelson producing one of golf's greatest ever rounds to win the Open Championship by three shots, the spectacular moment did not get the ovation it deserved and people have been expressing astonishment on Twitter as to why his play was not being broadcast.

Instead the BBC focused their attention on British players such as overnight leader Lee Westwood and the charging Ian Poulter.

As Mickelson romped to a glorious win on the back nine, the cameras finally started following Lefty, but just that increased the anger of those who only witnessed part of the triumph.

Personally i just feel, the English media are just too 'Patriot-centric'. When it comes to supporting their own, they will turn the whole world upside down just to see all British athletes get the attention they don't deserve.

Congrats Phil!
