Au Revoir Saha!!! Former United Striker calls time on career

Louis Saha

Louis Saha

Louis Laurent Saha has retired from professional football. The former Manchester United striker chose his 35th birthday to announce his retirement on Twitter and thanked his former teammates, managers and fans during his career. Born August 8, 1978, Saha began his footballing career at Clairefontaine football academy and moved to FC Metz in 1997. He had a loan spell at Newcastle United but it was at Fulham that he came into prominence. He scored a total of 63 goals in 142 appearances to make him a cult hero at Craven Cottage. He made his big move to Manchester United in 2004 for £12.8 million and replicated his goal scoring exploits at Old Trafford, at one point starting ahead of Dutch striker Rudd Van Nistelrooy. During his stay, Saha won two league titles and also lifted the Champions League in 2008. In his five seasons at United, he scored 42 goals in 124 appearances.

He played for other Premiership teams including Everton,Tottenham and Sunderland but could never replicate his form at these clubs due to re- occuring injuries. He joined Lazio on a six month deal in 2013 but managed only six appearnces scoring non. Saha made his French debut against Belgium in 2004 and went on to represent the national team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany where they finished second. He made a total of 20 appearances for Les Blues, scoring four goals.

Saha will be remembered for his clinical finishing and his ability to score brillaint goals. The goal he scored against Chelsea in 2009 FA cup final readily comes to mind and has scored so many others in nature. His left foot was sublime and during his stint at United, he formed a solid partnership with Ronaldo and Rooney, making it the most feared attacking trio in England at the time. He will be remembered as one of the world's most underrated strikers and I doff my hat to an uncelebrated goal scoring genius.
