Its the Survival of the Fittest... Welcome to the 2013 - 2014 Barclays Premier League season

The English Premier League was born in 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League, which was originally founded in 1888 and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. This deal will be worth £3 billion this season with BSkyB and BT Group securing the rights to broadcast 116 and 38 games respectively.

The EPL is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people. In the 2010–11 season the average Premier League match attendance was 35,363, the second highest of any professional football league behind the German Bundesliga and stadium occupancy was 92.2% capacity. The Premier League ranked second in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years.

Since 1888, a total of 23 clubs have been crowned champions of the English football system. Of the 45 clubs to have competed since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, five have won the title: Manchester United (13), Arsenal (3), Chelsea (3), Blackburn Rovers (1) and Manchester City (1). Manchester United are the current champions.

Coming into this season the EPL has taken a lot of innovative measures most significant of all being the introduction of Goal Decision System a form of Goal line technology football has been crying for. The system uses 14 cameras and will send a signal within the space of a second to the referee's watch and ear-piece indicating that the ball has crossed the line.

The Premier League over the years has never been short of drama, intrigues, glorious goals, thrillers and what have we. This season is expected to be no different, with the million pound signings brought into the league, fans and spectators of the beautiful game can expect a blockbuster show this brand new season.

Sportunes will be analyzing each of the 20 team's chances - The contenders, The pretenders, The new comers and Others.. Welcome to the 2013 - 2014 Barclays Premier League season!!

Contenders

Manchester United

Manchester United will be in the running for their 14th premier league title and 21st overall. As defending champions they are the earliest favorites to win the title but they are coming into the premier league season at the back of a below par Pre season performance which saw them win just 3 matches against far lesser oppositions. With the absence of Legendary Scotman and club figure head for over two decades Sir Alex Fergusson in the dug out, the red devils might just look a little bit shaky, but if you know the Manchester club very well, you will know they will always fight to the very end.

New manager David Moyes has already snapped his first Manchester United trophy last week by winning the community shield, but whether he has what it takes to win his first ever major trophy? May 11 2014 will give us a definite answer.

Manchester City

Manchester City will be hoping they can win their second ever league title this season. If there is any club that can push Man Utd all the way to the wire, it has to be Man City. Just like their noisy neighbors, Manchester City have brought in a new Manager - Manuel Pellegrini who will be leading them from the dug out this season, but unlike Moyes, the Chilean is not scared of spending as he's spent over £100 million so far in the transfer market compared to Moyes's £2million. Since money is now the name of the game, Sportunes expect the blue half of Manchester to go head to head with the so called big boys for the premier league title.

Chelsea

Chelsea are desperate to win a fourth league title, so desperate that they had to recall the services of their most successful coach ever - Jose Mourinho. A league title this season will make sure they surpass their London rivals Arsenal on a haul of Epl titles. Who can doubt the Special one's ability to complete the mission?. Although he hasn't made any major signing just yet but from what we have learnt over the years on how he's transformed ordinary men into 'gods', Chelsea are definitely going to have a big shout in deciding who wins the 22nd edition of the English Premier League title.

Pretenders

Arsenal

Arsenal will be gunning for their fourth English premier league title and their first in 10 years. This season should be another classic joke for the gunners after making just 1 juvenile signing with 14 players departing the club. Another fourth place finish should be on the radar for the north London outfit but Arsene Wenger saying they are going all out in search of their 14th league title in English football only makes the manager a pretender.

Tottenham Hotspurs have been engrossed in a tug of war all through the summer in efforts to keep their most priced asset Gareth Bale. The north London club hierarchy will know that their progress in the league will depend on the availability of the Welsh man in their fold, if Tottenham yield to pressure and let go of the 23 year old then their 53 year spell without a league title will continue.

The club has also won eighteen League titles, seven FA Cups and a record eight League Cups on the domestic front. But the red half of  Merseyside club haven't won the league title since 1990 and have no right whatsoever to contend for this season's title not with the daily tussle they have been facing for the better part of the summer to keep stalwart striker Luis Suarez.

They were also founder members of the Premier League in 1992 and have remained there ever since, this position was threatened for the better part of season where they were always swimming in relegation waters but managed to sail through as they finished just five points above the relegation zone. Boosted by the contract extension of  top marks man, Christian Benteke and a couple of good signings coach Paul Lambert will be looking to correct all the wrongs of last season.

Sunderland's trouble throughout last season has been well documented, they sacked Martin Oneil, the players and fans were always living in relegation fear until Coach Paulo Di Canio was hired to bring calmness to the storm. The Italian coach will be undergoing his first full season in charge, with the disciplinarian and no nonsense kind of coach that he is coupled with the kind of form the Black cats showed to beat relegation last season, Sunderland should have a decent season.

Backed by Al Fayed billions over the years, The club has established local bragging rights where they are the oldest established football team from London playing in the Premier League. New owner and American business man Shahid Khan has no interest in putting a foot on the pedal as he's bank rolled the cottagers to bring in some top signings that will make them thrive in a league described as the 'hardest league in the world'.

Norwich City

For some reasons that we might not be aware of, Norwich have been the busiest team in the Premier league this transfer window. The canaries have made a couple of decent signings but have shown eleven players the exit doors including their hit man Grant Holt who was thrice voted club player of the year in his four year spell at Carrow road. But with the recruitment of Gary Hooper who enjoyed so much success with Celtic, and the likes of Martin Olsson now in the mix, they should have enough firepower to keep them in their third consecutive premier league season.

After two years playing football in the third tier, Southampton secured promotion to the premier league last season . The club made a terrible start to last season's campaign which saw then coach Nigel Adkins lose his job and was replaced by former Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino who secured The Saints a respectable 14th place finish in their first season back in the top flight.. The Argentine who is set to take charge of his first full season with Southampton, will hope his players can replicate the form they showed towards the end of last season which saw them beat the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.

Last season saw Stoke City make little progress from their previous campaign, they finished with just 42 points their lowest in their 5 year premier league career. The potters have since parted ways with then manager Tony Pulis who was an advocate of the long ball kind of play. With new manager Mark Hughes now in charge of the Britannia dug out, will the Welsh man follow the pattern that brought his compatriot Pulis and Stoke so much success over the years?
