REAL MADRID 0 ATLETICO MADRID 1
The fierce derby between cross town rivals reached a climax this weekend with Atletico registering a deserved win at the Bernabeu thanks to a Diego Costa goal. Madrid had record signing Gareth Bale on the bench with Luka Modric dropped in favor of Asier Illaramendi while Fabio Coentrao continued at left back. The Croatians absence showed and it didn't take long for Atletico to take the lead. A below par Di Maria was robbed off the ball and a fabulous pass found Diego Costa who calmly slotted in his 8th goal of the campaign.
Atletico had many chances to extend the lead but were wasteful in front of goal. Bale appeared in the second half but couldn't prevent Madrid losing to Atletico for the second consecutive time after the Copa Del Rey final. In fact Bale looked a bit uncomfortable and the Atletico players knew exactly what he wanted to do before he did it. Ancellotti must be blamed for not starting Modric and Bale while Simeone has to be hailed for building a mean determined machine in Atletico. The result means Atletico are joint top with Barcelona on 21 points while Madrid remain 3rd with 16 pts.

Barcelona ratched up their 7th consecutive La Liga win to ensure their best ever start to a league season. Lionel Messi opened scoring to notch up his 8th goal of the season but his celebration was cut short as he limped off with a thigh injury. A big big blow for the Blaugrana. However Almeria had little to offer in attack and Barcelona soon doubled their lead after a superb team play with Adriano finishing it off. No surprises with this result and if you are a betting man, Barcelona don't give heart attacks. It was a simple routine victory and way too comfortable than the results suggest. Its possible they exceed a 100 points this season, its after all La Liga. Barcelona are joint top with 21pts while Almeria find themselves fighting relegation early on.
A resurgent Valencia recorded a 1-0 victory over Real Valladollid while Real Sociedad and Sevilla played out a 1-1 draw. Osasuna's relegation battle continues after a dissapointing 1-0 home loss to Levante while new boys Elche shocked Celta Vigo 1-0 away from home. A spirited Getafe beat Javier Aguirre's Espanyol 2-0 in Catalonia while Villarreal's fairy tale came to a crashing halt after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis.
