Champions League Match Day 2 Review

Champions League is Back! Season 2013/14 Campaign is gaining its shape and form;and Sportunes won't fail to let you into the major events that were displayed...Here We Go!

Steaua Bucuresti 0-4 Chelsea

At the double: Ramires celebrates his second goal of the night to make it 3-0 to Chelsea

Jose Mourinho wouldn't have appreciated anything more than sticking three points on the group E points board; making it known that Fc Basel's match day one defeat at Stamford Bridge was mere fluke as his Chelsea team made easy work of Romanian champions Steaua Bucuresti scoring four unreplied goals. Ramires helped himself with a brace, Coupled with an own goal from a Steaua defender and Super Frankie finish, Chelsea were able to register their first win of the campaign. Juan Mata was restored into the first 11 but it was German winger Andre Schurrle who stood out the most in the middle of the pack.

Fernando Torres was forced off he pitch in the 11th minute after suffering an injury to his leg, We at Sportunes wish the Spanish forward a quick recovery.

Arsenal 2-0 SS Napoli

Too hot to handle: Mesut Ozil (centre) celebrates the opening goal with his Arsenal team-mates

Arguably the biggest game of the night, Arsenal's longest serving manager in history Arsene Wenger savoured another moment of victory in his 17th year as the top boss of the Red and White Army. A stunning 8th minute left foot strike from club's record signing Mesut Ozil and of course his assist for Olivier Giroud's cool finish gave Arsenal their 10th consecutive win this season. The result also leaves Napoli with their first defeat of the season after their blistering start to the Italian SerieA league.

Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Olympique de Marseille

Robert Lewandowski (AFP)

A Lewandowski show of brace gave German club and 2013 UCL Runner-up Dortmund their first 3 points of this season's campaign. The Pole scored two goals in either side of  a delightful free-kick from Marco Reus, to send the 80,000 fans in the Signal Iduna park to a loud cheer as they roared to second position on the table.. Marseille remain winless, pointless and stuck at the rock bottom as the so called 'group of death' begins to take shape.

Celtic FC 0-1 Fc Barcelona

Sly dig: After bringing Neymar down, Brown appeared to go in for seconds

Who needs Lionel Messi when you have a Cesc Fabregas? The Spaniard cemented Barcelona's place at the top spot after his 76th header was enough to see out Celtic on their own terrace. Brazilian Wonderkid Neymar Jr made the headlines for both the right and wrong reasons, The 21 year old contributed to the only goal of the match by being actively involved in the buildup, but earlier on an exaggerated response from him earned Scot Brown a straight Red Card after the Celtic captain appeared to have kicked him on his hand. "I don't think Neymar does himself any favours by the way he behaves at times," Celtic coach Neil Lennon said after the game.

Ajax 1-1 AC Milan

What would AC Milan ever do without bad boy Mario Ballotelli? Ajax thought they had the game when Stefano Denswil evaded Sulley Muntari to power a free header past Christian Abbiaiti in the 90th minute. Milan needed an immediate response as there was little or no time left, and up stepped Mario Balotelli who created a theatre to give Milan a last gasp equaliser. The referee indicated that Ajax's van der Hoorn had grabbed Balotelli's shirt, but as our animated GIF shows Balotelli had grabbed van der Hoorn's entire body and infact the ball was nowhere near either player. The match official pointed to the spot and Balotelli tucked the spot kick into the bottom corner - leaving De Boer livid.

The Ajax coach said after the 1-1 draw: “With Balotelli you know he can score from scratch and create theatre. That cost us two points,”

“This point comes with a bitter taste. At the end of the day I can live with a point, but to concede with the penalty was disappointing. There are always moments of contact in the box.
"It’s about letting go at the right moment and Van Der Hoorn did that. It was ridiculous that penalty was awarded."

Fc Porto 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Arda Turan Atletico Madrid

A dramatic comeback by Atletico Madrid gave all 3 points to the Madrid based club. After rewriting history over the weekend by beating their fiercest rivals Real Madrid for the first time since 1999, the Diego Simeone lead side continued their top form after going a goal down to Colombia and Fc Porto forward Jackson Martinez who equaled fellow compatriot and former Atletico Madrid and Porto forward Radamel Falcao's four goals - the highest no. of goals by a Colombian in the competition. But all thanks to two assists from the boots of Gab, hence registering his name in Atletico Madrid's history books as the first player to give two assists in an European competitive game. Both goals were well converted by Arda Turan and the Turk sent the Los Colchoneros bench wild. Europe get ready cause this Madrid boys ain't backing down.

In other games; Julian Draxler's 54 minute strike proved the difference between Fc Basel and German Visitor's Schalke 04;as it was a night to be remembered with Fc Basel fans invading the pitch which lead to the game being halted for a while in the first half. An early matchday kickoff between Zenith St Petersburg and Austria Wien ended in a scoreless draw
