BARCELONA AND PSG WILL HAVE TO LIVE TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER DAY

BARCELONA 4 2 REAL BETIS

The win gives Tito Vilanova’s men an almost unassailable lead of eleven points with only twelve left to play for, but, until the introduction of Messi, there was real chance that they could have lost the match.

Betis took an early lead through Dorlan Pabon but Alexis Sanchez levelled things up soon after and the hosts then went on to dominate the half but failed to score the goal that their dominance deserved.

Rubén Pérez punished their profligacy with a strike just before the interval to ensure that Betis took a lead to half-time.

David Villa, who missed a host of first-half chances, levelled things up on 56 minutes but was immediately substituted for Messi, who only took four minutes to whip a free-kick past Adrián to give the hosts the lead for the first time.

Messi then finished off a great move on 71 minutes to make it four and ensure all three points.

PSG 1 1 VALENCIENNES

What was supposed to be a night of celebration for Paris Saint-Germain fell flat as they were surprisingly held 1-1 at home by Valenciennes in Ligue 1.

Victory would have made winning their first title in 19 years a formality but they were to be denied by a first-half goal from Gael Danic followed by referee Castro’s controversial decision to send off home captain Thiago Silva at the end of the opening 45 minutes. Alex did head a late leveller for the 10-man hosts, who at least saved some face by avoiding defeat, even if they will have to wait at least one more week for the title.

PSG made a nervy start to the game that was capped by the opening goal from Danic after 17 minutes. Vincent Aboubakar was given far too much room to fire a shot at goal, which Nicolas Douchez could only parry into the path of the winger, who finished with ease.

To make matters worse for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, Thiago Silva was dismissed just before break for a rather benign pull on the referee’s elbow as he tried to get the official’s attention.

It seemed that the hosts were to be frustrated yet Alex headed them level with little over five minutes remaining.
