Barclays Premier League Review. Season 2013/2014, Episode 2

Fulham 1 3 Arsenal

Classy: Arsenal didn't look at team in disarray as they confidently swept Fulham aside

Arsenal put any talks of early season crisis on hold as they dispatched Fulham 3 goals to 1 at Craven Cottage. Arsenal got on the score sheet despite torrential rain, Oliver Giroud managed to control Aaron Ramsey's miscued shot as the French man slotted the gunners into a 14th minute lead. It was his second EPL goal in as many matches and he's now scored thirteen goals in London. Four minutes before half time Lukas Podolski who was relatively quiet through out the match powered Arsenal into a two goal lead after Fulham's goalie Stockdale could only parry a Theo Walcott shot into the path of the German.

Two goals turned to three in the 68th minute as Lukas Podolski bagged himself a brace. The goal was all about Santi Cazorla's footwork, the Spanish maestro laid a delightful pass to Podolski, who brilliantly found the bottom corner.  Fulham new signining Darren Bent came off the bench to put the home side on the score sheet to spark a come back, but a come back was never to be as Arsenal held their own to win their first EPL match of the season.

Aston Villa 0 1 Liverpool

Skill: Sturridge rounded Aston Villa keeper Brad Guzan to score the opener

Aston Villa will be cursing their luck as they had to face a top team for the third time in a matter of one week. The Birmingham club lost to Daniel Sturridge's 28th minute swift strike as they lost at home to Liverpool. Who needs Luis Suarez when you have a Sturridge? It was the English man's eighth goal in his last seven league matches.  Liverpool's win gave them their best start to a Barclays Premier League season since the 2008-09 campaign, in which they finished second.

Cardiff City 3 2 Mancheser City

Hero: Fraizer Campbell's goals could prove vital all season for the newly-promoted side

Undoubtedly the match of the weekend, Cardiff city shocked last year's Premier League runners up in a 3 - 2 thriller. The Welsh club appeared destined for defeat after Man City took the lead early in the second half through Edin Dzeko's superb strike, but Malky Mackay's newly promoted side levelled through Aron Gunnarsson before Fraizer Campbell produced two headed goals.

Although Alvaro Negredo scored in added time to make a pulsating match 3-2 and then blazed a shot over the bar from close range with the last kick of the match, Cardiff held on for a dramatic victory.

Roberto Soldado

In another Sunday match, Tottenham maintained their 100% start to the season as they beat Swansea 1 - 0. Just like last weekend, new signing Roberto Soldado was the match-winner with a second-half penalty after Jonjo Shelvey had brought down Andros Townsend in the area.

In other matches Stoke City got their first win of the season as they came from behind to beat newly promoted Crystal Palce 2 - 1. Marouane Chamakh put Palace ahead in his first start for the club, beating Shawcross to the ball to fire home, before Charlie Adam equalised with a smart finish. But it was Shawcross who had the last word, finishing from close-range after Palace had failed to clear from a Stoke corner.

At the KC stadium, Ten-man Hull City got their home league campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 success over Norwich City. Robbie Brady's first-half penalty was the difference between the two sides, while Yannick Sagbo's red card five minutes later left Hull hanging on in the second half.

Everton were held to their second successive draw of the new Barclays Premier League season as they shared a goalless affair with West Bromwich Albion. Both sides had chances of note in a game largely defined by an entertaining tussle between the teams' respective midfields, but Marouane Fellaini could have given his side the points late on at Goodison Park only for his close-range effort to bounce back off the post. A Seamus Coleman cross-cum-shot also hit the bar in injury-time as Everton were left frustrated.

Southampton netted a late goal for the second week in a row to claim a 1-1 draw against Sunderland at St Mary's on Saturday. Emanuele Giaccherini gave the visitors an early lead but Southampton dominated proceedings and had a Jay Rodriguez goal ruled out for offside and two penalty appeals turned down as they struggled to find a breakthrough. However, after Rickie Lambert had scored a 90th-minute winner against West Brom last Saturday, Jose Fonte popped up with a last-gasp header to equalize two minutes from time.

In another stalemate of the weekend, Newcastle United registered their first point of the new EPL season as they were held to a 0-0 draw by West Ham United.
