Bundesliga Review. Season 2013/2014, Episode 3

Borussia Dortmund 1 0 Werder Bremen

Table topping Borussia Dortmund maintained their 100% start to the season with a comfortable 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday.

Bremen had kept clean sheets in their opening two Bundesliga games, and they looked to continue in such fashion until Robert Lewandowski broke the deadlock in the second half at the Signal Iduna Park. Kevin Grosskreutz’s short pass was collected by Reus in the box and he squared the ball along the six-yard box where Lewandowski was on hand to tap home.

Bayern Munich also maintained their 100 per cent start to the season, but they were made to work hard for a 2-0 victory over Bavarian rivals 1. FC Nürnberg.

David Alaba was denied from the penalty spot in the first half, before Nürnberg’s Raphael Schäfer made a string of saves to keep the hosts at bay after the break. Bayern’s pressure told, however, as a Franck Ribery header and Arjen Robben’s brilliant solo effort sealed the points.

Hannover 96 2 1 Schalke 04

Jens Keller's Schalke disappointing start to the season continued after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Hannover and were reduced to nine men.

The Royal blues are yet to record a victory this season and they got off to the worst possible start on Saturday when defender Benedikt Howedes was dismissed after 15 minutes following a professional foul on Mame Biram Diouf in the penalty area.

Szabolcs Huszti converted the spotkick but would receive his matching orders later on.

The visitors fell further behind when Diouf doubled the advantage shortly before half-time but Adam Szalai did halved the deficit for Schalke 10 minutes after the interval.

Huszti was then sent off 15 minutes before the final whistle as Christian Fuchs was given a second yellow card in the 85th minute to Schalke's misery start to the season.

There was joy for Bayer Leverkusen following a 4-2 home success over Borussia Monchengladbach also on Saturday which puts them in second. Stefan Kiessling opened the scoring for the hosts from the spot, before Sidney Sam doubled the advantage.

Martin Stranzl and Juan Arango hit back with two in three minutes for the visitors after the break, but further goals from Sam and Gonzalo Castro sealed the points for the hosts.

Hertha Berlin pulled the plug on Hamburger SV's 50th anniversary celebrations, after Adrian Ramos netted the decisive goal in a 1-0 win.

Hertha spurned their fair share of chances, before Ramos struck with 16 minutes remaining to condemn the Bundesliga's only ever-present club to their second defeat in as many outings.

At the Coface Arena, Choupo-Moting and Nicolai Muller gave Mainz a 2-0 home victory over Wolfsburg, who had summer signing Luiz Gustavo sent off.

Hoffenheim and Freiburg drew 3-3 in an action packed game at the Rhein-Neckar Arena which also saw three men sent off. Hoffenheim's Sejad Salihovic opened the scoring from the spot in the ninth minute before being promptly dismissed for foul and abusive language. Oliver Sorg equalised four minutes later, but Kevin Volland responded as the hosts regained the lead.

In a roller coaster game, Karim Guede equalised on the half-hour mark for Freiburg who then lost Franics Coquelin just before half-time to a second bookable offence. Sebastian Freis gave the visitors the lead for the first time midway through the second half, but Tobias Strobl equalised with 13 minutes to go and Freiburg's Admir Mehmedi was dismissed at the end of a frantic game.

Also Augsburg defeated vfb stuttgart 2-1 as Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Eintracht Brauschenweig 2-0 in the battle of 'Eintracht'.
